The Greek mezzo soprano Anna Agathonos completed her vocal studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and after that joined the Opera Studio of Marseilles (CNIPAL) for two years. First engagements led her to the opera houses of Marseilles, Avignon and Rouen as well as the music festivals of Aix-en-Provence (title role in La Cenerentola, 2000) and Pesaro (Melibea in Il Viaggio a Reims, 2002).
From 2001 to 2010 she was a member of the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen where she began as a lyric mezzo soprano and took over parts in several productions of rarely performed works of the belcanto era (a.o. Bellini Zaira, Donizetti L' assedio di Calais, Meyerbeer Il Crociato in Egitto). Starting 2006 she moved on to the dramatic mezzo repertoire, appearing as Azucena, Amneris, Carmen, Cassandre (Berlioz Les Troyens), Dalila, The Composer and Auntie (Britten Peter Grimes) and later added Ulrica, Old Lady (Bernstein Candide) Jezibaba and Ortrud to the roles she has performed.
Anna Agathonos interpreted the Young Syrian in the world premiere of Enjott Schneider's Das Salome-Prinzip and took over the female main part in the world premiere of Alexander Müllenbach's opera Die Todesbrücke in the 2003 edition of the festival Ruhrtriennale as well as at the Théâtre National du Luxembourg. Furthermore she embodied Anna in Isidora Zebeljan's contribution to the Eichbaumoper which had its world premiere in the metro-station of Mühlheim an der Ruhr in 2009.
The greek singer worked as a freelance singer between 2010 and 2019. Guest contracts have led her to the State Opera of Hannover, the State Theatre of Oldenburg, the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich, the State Theatre of Nuremberg as well as to the opera houses of Erfurt, Chemnitz, Bonn, Mönchengladbach und Pforzheim. She has also appeared at the Greek National Opera in Athens, Opera Ireland in Dublin, the Bartók Plus Opera Festival in Miskolc, the Klagenfurt Opera and the Open Air Festival Oper Burg Gars in Austria.
The accomplished song recital and oratorio singer sang in several performances of Beethoven's 9th Symphony and Verdi's Requiem and took over the Alto Part in performances of Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle and his Stabat Mater as well as Mahler's 3rd Symphony. In December 2022 she gave her Debut in the Cologne Philharmonic as Old Lady in a concert performance of Bernstein's Candide in the Version by the famous German comedian Loriot.
Anna Agathonos joined the ensemble of the Gärtnerplatztheater as a permanent member in September 2020 and appeared in roles like Madame Flora in Menotti's The Medium, Filipjewna in Eugen Onegin, The Witch in Hänsel und Gretel, 3. Dame in Mozart's Magic Flute and Old Lady in Bernstein's Candide.
